Kitchen Extension

A STUNNING KITCHEN EXTENSION WITH A UNIQUE FEATURE

Our team made a single-story kitchen extension that not only expands the living space but also incorporates a well into the design, making it a centerpiece of the kitchen floor.
Built in 10 weeks

the client

In Dalton, a family approached us with a simple but important need: they wanted to expand their kitchen.

During our initial groundworks for the extension, an unexpected discovery was made—an old well hidden beneath the floor!

The family was interested and asked us to incorporate this unique feature into the new design.

our objective

Our mission was clear.

We were to build a usable, spacious kitchen extension that not only met the family’s practical needs but also highlighted the newly discovered well as a focus point.

We aimed to blend modern construction techniques with this historical element to create a unique space that the family would cherish.

how we did it

project planning

The project began with thorough planning.

After the surprising discovery of the well, our team had to adapt our initial plans.

We consulted with engineers to ensure the well could be safely preserved within the new layout.

The plans included detailed drawings showing the integration of the well with a glass cover to make it a visible feature in the kitchen floor.

There were 3 key points that we needed to stick to during this project:
  • Space Layout: We designed the extension to maximise the kitchen’s usability and highlight the historic well.
  • Materials Selection High-quality, durable materials were chosen to ensure the longevity of the extension.
  • Timeline and Budget Management We mapped out a detailed timeline to complete the project within ten weeks, keeping within the budget constraints provided by the family.

getting to work

The construction phase was divided into several key stages:
Excavation and Foundation Work
We started with excavation, carefully working around the discovered well. The area was secured and reinforced to prevent any damage during the rest of the construction.
Structural Development
  • Concreting: After excavation, a new concrete base was poured around the well, ensuring stability for the kitchen’s new flooring.
  • Blockwork and Framing: The walls and frames for the extension were erected, defining the new kitchen's expanded layout.
  • Roofing: We installed a fiberglass roofing system, chosen for its durability and weather resistance.
Installation Phase
  • Joinery: Custom cabinets and a kitchen island were crafted to fit the new dimensions, enhancing the overall functionality of the space.
  • UPVC Fixtures: Energy-efficient windows and doors were installed to improve insulation and bring natural light into the kitchen.
  • Tiling and Finishing: The floors were laid with stylish, durable tiles, while the section covering the well was fitted with reinforced glass, allowing the well to be viewed safely from above.
Exterior Finishes
The final steps in completing the kitchen extension involved careful attention to the building's exterior.

We installed new fascias, soffits, and guttering systems not only to ensure effective water drainage from the roof but also to work alongside the home's existing aesthetic.

These things were needed for protecting the structure against weather elements and improving the overall visual appeal of the extension, tying the new construction seamlessly into the old.

the results

The kitchen extension was completed on schedule, turning the family’s home into a more spacious and functional area.

The highlight, undoubtedly, was the preserved well, now a unique conversation starter and a beautiful element visible through the clear, toughened glass floor section.

The family was thrilled with the outcome, praising how the blend of modern design and historical preservation had surpassed their expectations.

The project not only significantly enhanced the value of their property but also deeply satisfied the family’s desire for a kitchen that stands out.
